Interview with Yellerkin

Yellerkin1

Slipping and sliding across several inch thick sheets of ice that refuse to disperse from the sidewalk, I make my way inside a café and scan the room for the subjects of today’s conversation. Settling into a corner table I notice a guy in a blue sweater and tan beanie making eye contact with me. I hesitate, going between thinking he’s one half of the duo Yellerkin and thinking that he’s cruising me in a very 1970s way- head nods, eye contact. I blush and look away. Surely he’s hitting on me and not thinking I’m here to interview him.

My phone buzzes and I look down to embarrassingly read a description of that very person, stating he’s at the café waiting. Finally, I’m certain this man isn’t a glory hole user but instead Luca Bucelatti, who with Adrian Galvin constitutes the newly fledged folk-pop duo Yellerkin. Luca is also Tei Shi’s beaux, and the producer of her acclaimed debut EP Saudade. Continue reading

Kaiotic Music Presents Tropical Paradiso

POSTER TROPICAL PARADISO

Kaiotic Music is presenting its first showcase at The Paper Box in Bushwick this Wednesday, January 29th, 2014.  Doors are at 8, first act goes on at 9.  $5 dollars at the door or online.  Come support some rising local artists and check out acts that I’ve been excited about.  RSVP on facebook if you so desire.

Here’s a little synopsis of what you’ll see and a playlist with the artists below:

Mattheu

Matthew White is a student at Colombia, A member of an acappella group, and a young NYC transplant.  Oh wait, he’s also putting out some incredibly nuanced, sexy, romantic and UK influenced Electronic Soul and R&B under the moniker Mattheu, and it forces us to beg the question- how do you find the time?  Breakout track Sanguine is what really placed Mattheu on the blog circuit, and I’m proud to have his Brooklyn debut at The Paper Box.  Come see this fresh face before his stocks start skyrocketing.  Oh also, check out his cover of Rihanna’s Diamonds to feel his stunningly sexy vibrato as he gives the track a Sade remake.

Opheliakaiotic

The Ophelia Featuring Theodore is an amazonian woman fronted duo writing and producing otherworldly R&B that transports listeners from a smoky manhattan nightclub to a beach in the 80s- from city chic to tropical funk.  It’s abstract at times yet approachable over all, with lyrics that clearly come from a lady locked in a room with her feelings begging for release, and production that is finely in tune and on the pulse of what’s trending in retro electronic soul.  Think Jessie Ware with more edge and a touch of ethereal, and think model/singer/future world dominator.

kodacrome

Kodacrome has been one of my favorite NYC outfits recently, a synth-pop duo comprised of Elissa and Ryan, artists, collaborators, lovers.  The beauty of their relationship shines through in their complex and edgy pop songs, framing Elissa as the narrator for tales in pop trappings.  This duo is poised for great things in music, and I’m honored and proud to have them join the line-up at Tropical Paradiso.

Video: Club Girls ‘The A.M.H.’

Christen Cappello, AKA Club Girls is a living contradiction and it’s fucking enticing.  She’s adorable and energetic- I like to say her look is 90s pretty girl, but with a hidden edge that’s razor sharp.  Think Eliza Dushku in ‘Bring It On’, except that Cappello isn’t joining any clubs.
