Rae Morris – Do You Even Know

Rae Morris

Rae Morris is no newcomer to the UK music scene, and it’s incredibly evident through her refined musical stylings and talents.  This track, Do You Even Know Me, is a solid and stunning pop song, accompanied by a thoughtful and fashionable video.  The thing here is that Rae’s style is devoid of scene-isms.  There is no edginess to her style- instead it’s classic and approachable.  The hooks are a bit old school, much like the vintage furniture stop motion spinning in her video, but Rae herself, dressed in a stunning red piece, is evocative and emotional, honest and immersive.  Check out the video below, followed by a remix of the track by Kaiotic favorite Oceaán.

SLK – ‘Be’

slk be
While SLK‘s first single was intriguing and well made, it’s with follow up Be that she solidifies her right to be in the eyes of the music mongering few, before the sound amassing culture gobbles up a new and flavorful morsel.  While Ride winds along potholed pavement and eerily romantic landscapes, Be takes off, accompanied by bobbing heads and gyrating crotches. With fantastic production from Embody tailoring this second release, a picture begins to form of the artist who stands before us (and the potential EP we can expect).  This is a woman whose handsome style exhales through her evocatively deep vocals, who separates herself from the pack not only through the sheer quality of her music but also her own veritable persona.

Introducing: Hawkon

hawkon 2

Hawkon‘s look and sound are synonymous- a dreamy filter over prints and washed out florals, interrupted only by glitchy, digital noise and interference.  It adds a surprisingly harsh edge to the mostly immersively dreamy music.  As though the listener floats through the sounds, he builds a chorus around swelling synths and rich vocals, and occasionally decides to jarr you back to a digital reality.  Amidst the beauty of the sliding synths, a click or tack will remind you that Hawkon is meditating on every pulse, each beat change, and every embellishment.  The result is a surprisingly fantastic electro-dream pop track in the vein of Until The Ribbon Breaks or Crowd Shy.

Introducing: Jungle

UK electro-soul duo Jungle is so fucking fresh that even their website gives me #FOMO.  Like their online personality, their music is a sonic assault of cool and conglomeration of hip, all presented in a flush and chic manner. Continue reading

There are some really great tracks in this week’s digest.  A single taken from Haim‘s Days Are Gone Deluxe edition (co-written by Twin Shadow), a new single from Mapei (which is completely hitting the spot right now).  The debut track from Hartebeest is fantastic, Lorde’s Royals gets the remix treatment from touring mate Until The Ribbon Breaks, Donna Summer’s Bad Girls goes Gigamesh, and Easy Lover debuts a new track (by the way, EP release show will be at The Paper Box on October 23rd).

XOXO

In honor of the end of the NYC heat wave and in anticipation of the coming weekend, I’ve combined a nostalgic photo of my college apartment’s collection of Four Loko and a playlist full of astoundingly well made pop and dance music.  Hopefully it will give you the jolt you need to make it to the weekend, and maybe provide your soundtrack to leisure.
