Introducing: Broods

Broods hail from New Zealand and bring with them their debut track Bridges.  Under production from Joel Little (AKA Lorde’s Pure Heroine), the track is a glowing dream pop single with a deep, sexy bass.  It seems New Zealand doesn’t want to miss out on the fun Australia had been having earlier this year. Welcome to the party islanders, way to make an entrance.

Lorde‘s (Ella Yelich-O’Connor) first single, Royals, rattles on about not being one of the elite, the posh, the wealthy and successful (in the pop world).  While most attitudes about the lyrics have been receptive, it is still controversial in that some bloggers out there have deemed the lyrics racists (ie; this post on feministing.com), and have spurred debate about a young feminist artist as well as the proliferation of Black culture.  My take?  I saw a 13 year old girl singing it on the street the other day and genuinely appreciated the widespread love of the song.  I’d rather hear that than ‘work bitch!’.   Continue reading

Weekly Digest

There are some really great tracks in this week’s digest.  A single taken from Haim‘s Days Are Gone Deluxe edition (co-written by Twin Shadow), a new single from Mapei (which is completely hitting the spot right now).  The debut track from Hartebeest is fantastic, Lorde’s Royals gets the remix treatment from touring mate Until The Ribbon Breaks, Donna Summer’s Bad Girls goes Gigamesh, and Easy Lover debuts a new track (by the way, EP release show will be at The Paper Box on October 23rd).

Until The Ribbon Breaks: Rising star?

Until The Ribbon Breaks, Pete Lawrie Winfield of the UK, released Pressure back in April and it instantly caught my eye.  It was ahead of the curve with current RnB trends and the production is nearly perfect.  Intelligent and original, the lyrics are just poetic enough, but best of all the song is unexpected.  Every transition creates intrigue; the first time the chorus comes in and there’s the upwards scale billowing into the EXACT same beat, it manages to seem like the song has slowed down.   Continue reading
