Time flies, and so do new music releases. In an attempt to attach longevity to music, and a timestamp to our soundtracks here is my 18th monthly on rotation playlist. It’s alive, so subscribe for updates throughout the month of the best new music.
Hawkon‘s look and sound are synonymous- a dreamy filter over prints and washed out florals, interrupted only by glitchy, digital noise and interference. It adds a surprisingly harsh edge to the mostly immersively dreamy music. As though the listener floats through the sounds, he builds a chorus around swelling synths and rich vocals, and occasionally decides to jarr you back to a digital reality. Amidst the beauty of the sliding synths, a click or tack will remind you that Hawkon is meditating on every pulse, each beat change, and every embellishment. The result is a surprisingly fantastic electro-dream pop track in the vein of Until The Ribbon Breaks or Crowd Shy.
Coming out on No Recordings, L.A. artist Saol Álainn releases his debut track. The basis for the masterfully produced finished product is intrinsically romantic- Nostroke is an immersion into a fractured moment.
There are some really great tracks in this week’s digest. A single taken from Haim‘s Days Are Gone Deluxe edition (co-written by Twin Shadow), a new single from Mapei (which is completely hitting the spot right now). The debut track from Hartebeest is fantastic, Lorde’s Royals gets the remix treatment from touring mate Until The Ribbon Breaks, Donna Summer’s Bad Girls goes Gigamesh, and Easy Lover debuts a new track (by the way, EP release show will be at The Paper Box on October 23rd).

It was ahead of the curve with current RnB trends and the production is nearly perfect. Intelligent and original, the lyrics are just poetic enough, but best of all the song is unexpected. Every transition creates intrigue; the first time the chorus comes in and there’s the upwards scale billowing into the EXACT same beat, it manages to seem like the song has slowed down.
